When Anthony Crowley finally gets a Guardian Angel at the age of 48, he thinks perhaps that his lifelong streak of bad luck is ending. Until he learns that in three months, he’s destined to either save the world or die trying. It doesn’t help that the angel Aziraphale is the most beautiful person Crowley has ever seen, as well as a ridiculous, fussy, rebellious hedonist. Crowley’s not surprised to find himself falling for him. After all, it’s just one more bit of bad luck to fancy your Guardian Angel.

Also relevant was the comment: “What kind of horrible thing would Crowley need to be in to have a guardian angel?” to which Lillee.nika answered, “Let’s say he has trouble finding luck.” The comments also mentioned that Crowley would at some point get himself in trouble in order to see his Guardian Angel. This month’s article: A preview of my upcoming story Love Knot, to appear in the anthology Anna Karenina Isn’t Dead, from Improbable Press.

My mother often read Alfred Noyes’s poem The Highwayman to me as a child. It’s a story of love and rebellion, the forbidden romance of an (unnamed) thief and the daughter of an innkeeper on a moonlit road. Its famous opening lines tell of one of their clandestine meetings:

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.

The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.

The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,

And the highwayman came riding—

Riding—riding—

The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

Unfortunately, the story ends in tragedy. Sad as it is, The Highwayman is my favorite poem, so when I saw the call from Improbable Press for stories which give tragic literary heroines new endings, I immediately thought of Bess. Because surely Bess deserves a chance to show she is just as capable of eluding the law as her beloved highwayman!
