This month’s article is A Divine Romance: Writing prompts for a god/human relationship

The god Apollo had a lover named Iapyx, who was a mortal man. Apollo offered his paramour divine gifts, including prophecy and music, but Iapyx had a father in ill health, and he asked for the gift of healing. The story may be short, but there’s a lot to work with here, so onto some divine writing prompts, such as:

(God of the) Whirlwind romance. I am partial to both the love-at-first-sight trope and the slow burn. A god might find a human so beautiful that for them it’s love (or at least lust) at first sight, and with the gods being naturally attractive, it’s possible the instant love (lust) could go both ways. Alternatively, a god might watch a human long enough to fall in love, with the human unaware of it, or a human might develop a crush on a god without ever meeting him. The courtship could go slowly: it’s a strange pairing, the human and divine. Both parties might want to keep their attraction for each other a secret, leading to another one of my favorite tropes: It’s requited, they’re just stupid.

King Matthias doesn’t really want to be king, and he definitely doesn’t want to have to marry some other head of state who only pretends to like him for the chance at becoming royal spouse. But the needs of the kingdom come first, so Matthias reluctantly agrees to entertain nine suitors at the palace for a week of matchmaking. Matthias is stunned to find himself falling in love at first sight with one of them: a beautiful, kind-hearted young earl named Brian who doesn’t care much for the trappings of royalty. There’s just a couple of problems: Matthias’s advisors feel that any other suitor would be better, and those other suitors are very jealous of Brian. In fact, somebody dislikes Brian enough to mount steadily more dangerous attempts at sabotaging his chances. But Matthias is willing to risk everything to protect the man he loves, even though he’s sure that Brian doesn’t love him in return.

Finn Kelley is a gifted stage-show cold reader, manipulating his audience into believing that he’s psychic. Samuel Allsbury works as a purported medium with a team of fraudulent ghost investigators. Finn and Samuel take an instant dislike to each other, which is only made worse by the fact that they secretly find each other quite attractive. But when they’re drawn into the search for two missing women, they try to put their differences aside and be of some actual help, even though their psychic abilities are fake. Now if only the light bulbs would stop mysteriously shattering every time they have an argument.

This is a story in the style of Tollense: a steamy, tropey, slow-burning pine forest of a fic where the plot is the romance.
