Volume Blue of this collection contains my story “The Enfield Monster.”

I’m so very excited to have a story published, but I find myself missing the joy of Ao3 tags! So I wanted to share what the fic would look like if it was on Ao3:

Tags: two women falling in love never mind one’s a swamp monster, found family, true love, lifelong love, wlw romance, old age, fish cookies, cryptids, cryptozoology, secrets, romantic rescues, a little bit NSFW, singing frogs, you can never forget love

Summary: A human woman named Jessica and her swamp monster wife, Pearl, adapt to the changes that old age brings to their lifelong romance.

Going into the house was like stepping through a mirror. Everything had been unfamiliar, but once inside, it all snapped into place. Here was Jessica’s house, the new one, and there was Jessica herself. Orthopedic shoes, brown with dust. Curling hair, white with age. The house smelled pleasantly of fish and there were oily stains on Jessica’s apron.

“I went home,” Pearl said. She knew she had a sharp mournful cry, and struggled to keep it out of her voice. “Your old home.”

“Enfield,” Jessica said. “Oh, my dear, I haven’t lived there in twenty years.”

“I know.” Pearl said. “Now.”

“Your memory is getting worse,” Jessica said.

Tags for the anthology as a whole include spec fic, lgbtqia+, bipoc, disability, urban fantasy

The Enfield Monster: Two women falling in love, never mind one’s a swamp monster.

Excerpt:
There weren’t cell phones back then. No one knew about the accident. It started snowing again, heavily. Jessica had hit her head, and thought it was better to leave the truck and strike out for home. It was a stupid, addled decision. By the time the cold woke Jessica up fully, it was too late. She was lost in the snow, alone, and cold.
Pearl had seen the bright red taillights shining off of the road, and had come out of the warm water to investigate. She’d found human shoe-prints leading into an open field. Pearl’s six-toed tracks trailed after them, half-erased by the drag of her tail.

Y'all I'm delighted to share a blog post I wrote for Improbable Press on the background to my story, "The Enfield Monster," about the lifelong romance between a human woman, Jessica, and a swamp creature named Pearl.

Excerpt:

"I went home," Pearl said. She knew she had a sharp mournful cry, and struggled to keep it out of her voice. "Your old home."

"Enfield," Jessica said. "Oh, my dear, I haven't lived there in twenty years."

My story of cryptids emerging focuses on the lifelong romance between a human woman, Jessica, and a swamp creature named Pearl, who is based on the legend of the “Enfield Monster.” In the story, Pearl’s memory has started to weaken with age. I based Pearl’s experience on a very good friend whom I lost to dementia.

So thrilled to have a story in Volume Blue!

The Enfield Monster: Two women falling in love, never mind one's a swamp monster.

But Jessica was different too. She was not sharp and acidic like some people, not harsh, and caustic, and afraid. Jessica was open and soft and sweet and lonely. She saw a monster and she wasn't afraid, even when she heard the monster offer her shelter in a half-frozen swamp, even when she heard the monster promise (and Pearl had never lived this down) not to eat her.

"You can't eat me," Jessica had observed. "I'm bigger than you."
