Every Honeybee

Ruth wants to confess her love to her best friend Mary, but they’ve never even spoken of romance.

“It’s a best friend sweater,” Mary said, and oh if that didn’t pull hard at Ruth’s heart. “There’s a mistake in it. On purpose, I mean. It’s for luck. Because if you give a sweater to someone you love without a mistake, it dooms the rom— ah, the relationship. The— friendship.”

There was a fragile look in Mary’s dark eyes, fluttering eyelashes so fair they were nearly invisible. Someone you love, Ruth thought. But Mary meant as friends, or as honorary sisters, maybe. Not as lovers.

They’d never kissed, never held hands. Once they’d curled up together on the couch, and Ruth remembered exactly where Mary’s body had molded into hers. They were best friends. Friends . And the worst part was, Ruth feared Mary would never see them as anything else. Because Mary was— well, she was the loveliest person Ruth knew. Short and slender, with golden hair and pale skin dotted by so many freckles that they blended together in places.

But Mary hated her freckles. She hated being skinny. She didn’t like how wispy her hair was, escaping attempts to style it, clinging to her skin in pretty golden strands. She was so beautiful and every time Ruth tried to tell her, Mary just flushed red beneath her freckles and looked away.

Summary:

At three a.m., Anthony Crowley, a bartender just off his shift, was interrupted in his half-awake perusal of a Golden Girls episode by a knock on the door of his flat. Crowley dragged himself up off the couch and opened the door to find his attractive blond neighbor with the weird name standing in the hall in a pair of brown tartan pajamas.

“Hello,” the man said. “Could I ask you a question?”

Crowley would have shut the door in his face, honestly, if the man wasn’t so ridiculously hot even in pajamas with his blond curls mussed. Especially in pajamas with his curls mussed. Crowley didn’t know his neighbor well, just to say hi in the hallway, and not even by his actual name, because it was some strange name Crowley hadn’t properly caught the first time. But, like a miracle, here he was at the door of Crowley’s flat in the middle of the night, probably needing to ask if the heat was out or if Crowley could spare some common household good like a screwdriver or a flashlight.

“Sure,” Crowley said.

The man smiled at him. “I don’t suppose that you are ever, occasionally, a giant snake?”

Aziraphale inhaled deeply, taking in the glorious smell of the sushi on the counter. Fine food really was meant to be enjoyed with more than just taste. Just then, he noticed a white bird land on the windowsill beside him.

Aziraphale could have melted with happiness. A warm restaurant on a rainy night, exquisite sushi, and now, as soon as the black bird landed, he’d have a visit from Crowley—

Aziraphale sucked in a sharp breath as he saw another white bird land beside the first. Startled, he turned to find Gabriel standing beside him. The archangel made a disgusted face as he looked at Aziraphale’s sushi. Then he proceeded to talk on and on about something Aziraphale didn’t even want to understand.

The judge called on the man who sat opposite Allen. He stood, looking both uncertain and brave. “My name is Devin Smith,” he said. “I’m Riley’s Smith’s brother. I also work from home, and I’m quite flexible in my living arrangements. I’ve contacted a realtor here, in Pleasant Grove, and there are a couple of houses for sale near the elementary school that Clara and Ophelia attend. If the girls were placed with me, they would have very little additional disruption to their lives.”

Allen’s stomach lurched as he listened. A month ago he’d never even dreamed of becoming a parent, and now seeing that chance possibly being taken away filled him with anger. “You disowned your brother!” he exclaimed. “And now you think you can come in here—”

The judge called for quiet, but Devin paid it no attention, turning sharply on Allen. “And where have you been for the past five years?” he snapped. “You live an hour away and you know nothing about them—”

Fresh off her adventures in A Summoning, by Anonymous Dandelion, 12-year-old witch Linette settles into a new life as Anathema’s apprentice. When Anathema and Newt go on a trip, Linette reunites with old friends Aziraphale and Crowley as her babysitters. Which is all fine and good until you remember that Crowley’s experience as a nanny is largely being a bad (or at least mischievous) influence. Shenanigans ensue, new friends are made, and Linette even solves the mystery of why the potted fern in the window hates Newt.

Written as part of Fandom Trumps Hate, as a gift in honor of a donation to charity by Anonymous Dandelion, who wished for more adventures for their delightful OC Linette (and the potted fern).

Now if only the light bulbs would stop mysteriously shattering every time they have an argument.

Coming April 29: My next serial romance, “Dearly Beloved”: A powerful but lonely king believes his love for his beautiful, kind-hearted arranged fiancé will always be unrequited, but he still risks everything to protect him from those who want to derail the match.

This is a story in the style of Tollense: a steamy, tropey, slow-burning pine forest of a fic where the plot is the romance.

At first John felt like Henry was going backwards in growth, getting thinner, stumbling around like a new puppy. But then John realized the horrible truth: Henry was racing ahead, much faster than any man should. He was rushing toward old age and infirmity as if he’d skipped to the last chapter of the book of his life.

However, it must be said that Aziraphale’s desire was rather more— desirous than might be normal. Because Crowley was gorgeous. Tall, slinky, and seductive in his black clothing, with fiery hair that hung around his face if it wasn’t put up. When he worked in his garden, he often wore just a pair of black athletic trousers and a thin little shirt that clung to his sweaty torso.
So, yes, Aziraphale’s desire was desirous. But Crowley was so very shy.
