Anthony Crowley takes in his nephew, 11-year-old Warlock, after Warlock's parents die. And Warlock is great. He's sweet and funny and remarkably well-behaved for what he's gone through. It's just...it seems like maybe he didn't come alone.

The flat was quiet and dark, the sounds of Mayfair muted, five stories below, but Crowley could see the lights of other buildings stealing around the window blinds. The world was still out there, maybe vicious and tragic at times, but logical. Ordinary. Whatever was happening here in the sparsely furnished rooms of Crowley’s flat was something else.

Crowley was a logical man. Maybe even ordinary. He told himself not to get spooked by it, but he’d learned over the past few weeks that it was terribly easy to feel terribly uneasy when little bits and pieces of your life were ever so slightly wrong.
