HAPPY HALLOWEEN! If you’re in the mood for some free spooky stories, check out Nocturne Horror Magazine’s 2024 issue!
Thrilled to say one of my stories is included! Devoured: A woman tries to convince her grief-stricken mother to move out of a haunted house.
Excerpt:
Janet was the last to see Nicki. It was a memory with holes in it; later, Janet suspected her crystal-clear recall of what Nicki was wearing was due to the missing posters (yellow dress, white sandals, black braids, candy necklace). But Janet did know where Nicki had gone: into the field across the street. The kids weren’t supposed to go over there, of course, but it was the perfect place for robbers and tigers and supervillains to have their dreadful lairs.
Another hole in the memory existed because Janet had repeated Nicki’s last words so many times the recollection of them was actually in her own voice instead of Nicki’s.
Go hide, Janet!
The police assumed Nicki was warning of an imaginary threat, or else one of the other kids. Maybe, more sinister, one of the adults.
But Janet had private memories of that day, too. Things she’d guarded safe and unspoken. She remembered the sun in her eyes as she looked across the road into the field, the burn of a healing skinned knee and the taste of an orange popsicle. She remembered what had been chasing them.
